I Never Thought I Would...Be in love with a Grocery Store.

Updated: Aug 12, 2020

I'm in love. Seriously - I'm head over heels in love with a grocery store. It didn't happen overnight, but was something that grew over the ten years I've lived in Texas. I am in love with HEB. Now, those of you who don't live in Texas might be asking "what the heck is HEB?", while those of you who do live in Texas are nodding along and saying "yep, I love HEB too."

HEB is more than a grocery store. It's part of a community, and in times of crisis - HEB is the first on the scene!

How much do I love HEB? Let me count the ways:

1. Prices and Deals

HEB does a great job maintaining good prices. They also have coupons and deals all around the store. They have something called a Combo Loco coupon that is awesome! For example, a Combo Loco coupon for S'mores - buy a box of Graham Crackers and get the package of chocolate AND the marshmallows for free! Add that to the amazing customer service and HEB makes going to the grocery store a little easier.

2. Tortillas!

Tortillas? Yes - tortillas! HEB makes fresh tortillas in store everyday. If you're lucky, you can get a bag so fresh it's still hot! What's so good about their tortillas? They are amazing! They are so soft and perfect. They are so amazing that there is a write up about them in the food magazine Bon Appetit. Check it out here.

3. Employee Appreciation

When HEB was named favorite grocery store in America this year they gave every employee $100. During the Coronavirus quarantine, they increased their employees pay. Their employees ares as important to them as their customers. Every person I have talked to who works or has worked for HEB tells how supportive they are of their employees.

4. Community support

Years ago I was a dance booster club president at my daughter's middle school. The dance team put on a Valentine's dance as a fundraiser. We approached HEB to see if we could get some discounted items to decorate the cafeteria. They were so incredibly helpful and ended up giving us many items for free! HEB also has a program called Excellence in Education which rewards awesome teachers in communities. Teachers are honored and presented with gifts and cash!

5. Crisis support

After ten years of living in Texas I have noticed that whenever disaster strikes, the first one on the scene is always HEB. They have trucks at the ready stocked with water, food, and other essentials ready to go at any time. A hurricane hits - HEB is there. Flooding - HEB is there. They are more efficient and prepared than FEMA or the Red Cross.

This recent crisis with the Coronavirus is not different. HEB has been the backbone of relief efforts in Texas. When school was cancelled - our local HEB donated $100,000 to the Austin Independent School District to ensure kids got food during this time. They are also donating $3 million to various relief efforts around Texas! You can read more about that here. They work to make sure shelves are stalked and people are able to get what they need. They waived fees for Curbside shopping and Delivery. They work to protect their costumers AND their workers.

HEB is such a big part of this community. What they do for their employees, their costumers, and for our society as a whole is pretty amazing!

Which is why I love my HEB!
