Last week my parents celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
61 years!
They have had years of joy and prosperity. They have also endured years of grief and pain. Together they raised seven rather strong willed children. Together they lost one of those children too early. They have not always seen eye to eye, but they love each other.
When I called to wish my parents a happy anniversary, my mom talked about what my dad had done that morning. He woke up before my mom and wanted to do something special for her. Being in his eighties and having just recovered from major surgery, he was limited to what he could do. He knows my mom loves Christmas. I mean she really loves Christmas - the music, the decorations, everything. So my dad got out their small table top Christmas tree and put it up on the breakfast table. When my mom came into the kitchen, he told her it was an anniversary tree! They laughed and laughed and then had breakfast under their anniversary tree.
These are the moments that make a marriage. After 61 years, my parents are still creating those moments. Their love has been such an inspiration and example to me. Their love is a forever kind of love.
